UVC Lampen versus LEDs

The first mercury-vapor lamps made their appearance around 1835. Besides producing visible light these lamps emitted ultraviolet radiation in the 254 nanometer range.

Al aan het eind van de 19e eeuw kwam men erachter dat dit UV licht ontsmettende eigenschappen heeft. Inmiddels weten we dat UVC het DNA en RNA in microben vernietigt waardoor ze zich niet kunnen vermenigvuldigen en dus onschadelijk worden gemaakt. De vergelijking wordt wel eens gemaakt met een ei. Door microben met UVC te bestralen breekt het ei. Het ei kan nooit meer heel worden gemaakt. Dat is hoe UV-C disinfection werkt.

In recent years a lot of research has been done into LED technology. Subsequently, it has become apparant that LED chips can also produce UVC and that there are benefits compared to lamps, e.g. they are not limited to the 254 nanometer wavelength emitted by mercury vapor. This is an enormous advantage because the 260 to 280 nanometer range that LEDs can produce is more lethal to bacteria and viruses than the 254 nanometer wavelength of lamps.
